Today we are going to talk a bit about how the Internet has affected the United States Postal Service. Ever since the invention of E-Mail, the number of first class letters that is sent has been shrinking.In fact since 2006, it is down by about 30%. In addition, most companies are pushing to try to get you to go paperless and only receive your bill statements online. This might be fine for some fol;ks but for many, including myself, I want my statements sent the way that it has been done for decades, through the Post Office.
If you travel across America, there are countless small towns with some of the nicest people you could ever want to meet. Many of these small towns have small but quaint Post Office’s that are housed in unique and often historic buildings. These pieces of history are in danger of vanishing as the Post Office downsizes because less people are sending letters through first class. Down the road, the entire prospect of even having a Post Office is in extreme danger.
With all the technology we have these days and the fact that I am a computer tech, you would think that I would be the first person to use the internet in place of the Post Office. The truth is that I want to see this great institution that helped make our country what it is survive. I use their service whenever possible and I absolutely do not go paperless. I opt in for regular paper billing and receive all my bank statements through the mail. We still use regular mail to send out our receipts to our customers.
A few things we can do to help save this great enterprise is to stop going totally paperless, send a good old fashioned letter to your friend (they will really enjoy receiving it!) and use the postal service for sending your packages when ever possible. If we all continue to support this institution we can help defray it’s extinction. The Post Office is too great of an institution to loose forever.
